Summer classes are being taught by BJJ practitioner and MMA fighter, Ben Grove. Ben is a blue belt and a former wrestler with 10 years of experience. Following a brief collegiate boxing career, he turned to MMA to fulfill his need for competition. After training in BJJ for two years and competing in five amateur MMA fights, Ben traveled to Brazil to train with some of the world’s finest BJJ greats in schools where some of the finest MMA and BJJ fighters have trained. Ben trained with over 40 black belts, including many world champions. On August 13, Ben will fight in his first professional MMA debut in Scranton, PA. We invite students to train and benefit from Ben’s considerable talent and newfound knowledge from his extensive training experience in the founding country of BJJ.
Existing students are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible. New Penn State students, especially incoming freshmen, are welcome to schedule a free lesson in BJJ. We are conveniently located at Lionheart Fitness in downtown State College walking distance from all dorms and downtown apartment complexes. Though our blog is usually reserved for discussions relating directly to martial arts or fitness, we also like to acknowledge milestones accomplished by our members. Long-time member, Murali Haran received tenure from Penn State today. Murali is a statistics professor in the College of Science. Murali has been a boxing student and a personal training client for over five years. All of us at Titan would like to congratulate you on this great achievement.

Titan Fitness & Martial Arts is proud to announce the addition of Osahon Omo-Osagie (“Os”) and Michael Kowalski. Os will be overseeing the Boxing II while Mike will be running the Boxing I class during the summer semester slated to begin May 17, 2010. The boxing program will be overseen by Head Boxing Instructor and Penn State Boxing Coach, Dave Vacco. Both instructors have ties to Penn State Boxing, one as an assistant coach, the other as a competitor. We invite you to review their bios at the following links.
Michael Kowalski is a boxing instructor at Titan Fitness & Martial Arts. Mike has been boxing since 2006. Formerly, Michael was a student in the Titan Boxing program. Mike went on to become a member of the Penn State Boxing Team. He competed for the team during the 2009-2010 Collegiate Boxing season and fought five times. He took third place in the ECBA Regional Tournament.
Two Penn State boxers earned All-American status at the NCBA National Championships at West Point this past weekend. Long-time Titan members, AJ Williams (165 lbs.) and Jay Petraitis (175 lbs.) both advanced to the semi-finals of their respective weight classes to become All-Americans. We at Titan Fitness & Martial Arts would like to congratulate the fighters. Additionally, kudos must go out to Penn State boxing coach and Titan Boxing instructor, Dave Vacco, in guiding his fighters to such an excellent season and result at Nationals that also included two other national qualifiers, Matt Roy and Justin Portal.
Titan Fitness & Martial Arts is proud to announce the addition of Tyler Saltsman to our staff as Titan’s new Wrestling coach. Tyler is a four-time state champion from New Hampshire. He is a former Penn State wrestler who is now going to pursue an MMA career through his training at Titan. With the addition of Tyler, the mixed martial arts program becomes even more enhanced as he brings a wealth of knowledge to improve every student’s ground skills. For more on the tremendous credentials Tyler brings to Titan, check out his bio at http://www.titanfitness.com/blog/staff/tyler-saltsman.
Tyler Saltsman started wrestling in 6th grade losing only three matches during his middle school career while capturing two state titles and a New England title. Tyler went on to win state titles in all four years of high school becoming only the second wrestler in the history of the state of New Hampshire to be a four-time state champion. Tyler was also a New England champion and was the only wrestler ever in his school’s history to win 50 straight matches in one season. Tyler compiled a high school record of 168-9 and was a high school All-American. Tyler was also honored with selection into the High School Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Tyler selected Penn State to pursue his college wrestling career. He redshirted at Penn State during his freshman year and my sophomore year. After his sophomore year season Tyler won a wrestle off and started for the Nittany Lions posting a winning record until deciding to leave the team to pursue his MMA career at Titan where he also serves as the Titan Wrestling coach.
The Daily Collegian, Penn State University’s student newspaper, did a story on the merger between Lionheart and Titan Fitness & Martial Arts. It also got into the future of how the “conglomerate” is going to expand to become four clubs with the most notable and immediate being the Downtown Athletic Club, formerly the site of Titan Fitness & Martial Arts. The link is below. Enjoy.

Erik Paulson was a two-time light heavyweight shootwrestling champion. Following his fighting career, Mr. Paulson founded the fighting system Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW), one of the few complete mixed martial arts systems in the world today. It combines all elements of MMA to include boxing, Thai boxing, clinching, takedowns, and submissions. Mr. Paulson has had a tremendous influence on the present day mixed martial arts community training such notable fighters as Sean Sherk, Josh Barnett, James Wilks, and present UFC heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar.
Titan Fitness & Martial Arts is proud to be the only facility in Central Pennsylvania certified to teach Mr. Paulson’s amazing mixed martial arts fighting system. If you are interested in mixed martial arts, we encourage you to attend this amazing seminar. Prices are $150 for both days and $80 for one day of training. We encourage you to go to the seminar link of our website for more information. Spots are limited but a few are available. The best part? If you are from the Central PA region, State College, or Penn State, you don’t have to travel very far to learn from one of the all-time MMA greats. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of having the great Erik Paulson right here in State College.
